Greyish - hmm - lite fawn brown is what I have tuned for over 40 odd years.
LEave the chrome side cover off the top of the cylinder head and you can wiggle the plug out without tearing the tank off - WD I think suggested this a couple of years back. Makes tuning and checking plug color a lot easier.
Remember to take the bike for a run at mid range speeds - and to shut down with a minimum of idling to get an accurate color read from the spark plug.
But you are definitely 100% correct - the spark plug is the eyes of the soul of any engine - and tells most of the story with our Savages.
